This week’s wrap-up includes Twitter – stats on the Oscars and LinkedIn – new People You May Know. Here is what has been happening this week on social media.
New Twitter stats
Twitter continues to have a strong effect on live events as was evident during the Oscars early this week. According to the Twitter blog, there were 19.1 million tweets sent between 5 pm and 5 am Sunday, ET.

This now famous tweet toppled Barrack Obama’s tweet on winning his re-election to become the most retweeted in history. Meanwhile, there is a guy who intends to break this record with an adorable selfie with his canine friends.
LinkedIn is rolling out a new “People You May Know” feature
LinkedIn is rolling out its People You May Know in a sleek new design that features cards with larger photos. You also get to know why LinkedIn is suggesting a connection; if based on your address book import, suggested by LinkedIn. You will find this information by hovering over the bottom right of the photo. If the suggestion does not tickle your fancy, you can remove the suggestion to connect to that person by clicking the “x” icon at the top right of each card.
Facebook tightens the reins on commercial activity
Following recent concerns over private sales of firearms, Facebook has introduced “educational and enforcement efforts for people discussing the private sale of regulated items”. The following is the list as is on Facebook Newsroom.
- Any time we receive a report on Facebook about a post promoting the private sale of a commonly regulated item, we will send a message to that person reminding him or her to comply with relevant laws and regulations. We will also limit access to that post to people over the age of 18.
- We will require Pages that are primarily used by people to promote the private sale of commonly regulated goods or services to include language that clearly reminds people of the importance of understanding and complying with relevant laws and regulations, and limit access to people over the age of 18 or older if required by applicable law.
- We will provide special in-app education on Instagram for those who search for sales or promotions of firearms.
- We will not permit people to post offers to sell regulated items that indicate a willingness to evade or help others evade the law. For example, private sellers of firearms in the U.S. will not be permitted to specify “no background check required,” nor can they offer to transact across state lines without a licensed firearms dealer.
Heads Up! Facebook is redesigning the News Feed… Again
